The Other Jerusalem campaign seeks to challenge Israel’s prolonged occupation of East Jerusalem and the false notion of an “undivided Jerusalem.” The campaign aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem by promoting awareness about this population’s plight under Israeli occupation.
More than 50 years ago, Israel established a de facto annexation of East Jerusalem on June 28, 1967, in contravention of principles of international humanitarian law and international law. Since then, discrimination against Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem, including those cut off from the city by the separation barrier, has become routine and entrenched. As a result, Palestinians live in a separate and unequal Jerusalem where bureaucratic and legal systems allocate lesser protections and resources for education, shelter, public infrastructure and services.
